DEAD AHEAD is DEAD AHEAD
First day of our upcoming Zombie Horror show
DEAD AHEAD is in the can! This one is going to be quite frightening....
there were a couple of scenes tonight that were chilling (what I mean is, it's not often that things get scary watching the actors at the microphones) - I can only
imagine how terrifying they will be once music and sound
effects are added. The cast just knocked this one outta the park... some powerful performances.
I never thought we would do a Zombie feature - but being trapped with a thousand Zombies on an Ocean Liner out at sea was pretty hard to turn down. Can't wait for you all to hear it!! We are recording till Oct. 28th, and the release is planned for March. - JR

THE STAR ANGEL - A New Musical
Jeff Gage and I have been re-working our musical THE STAR ANGEL for the
stage. Here is a song from the show that "Sean" sings with "Pockets" - a
tramp clown ornament (Sean finds himself with his sister ON the tree
this particular Christmas Eve... long story). Sean is having a rough
Christmas - the first since the death of his father. That's where the
song comes in... as Sean sees an old car ornament that was his dads
favorite. Will Fafard sings the role of Sean, and yours truly is filling
in for Pockets until we can find someone good. Keep your fingers
crossed that we get this on the stage for Christmas, 2015!

TICONDEROGA Continues
Since its release in 2008, and re-release by Brilliance Audio in 2012, TICONDEROGA has become one of our most popular titles. Set in 1758 during the French and Indian War, the production featured fictional characters against the backdrop of actual events - including the epic battle of Fort Carillon (complete with bagpipes and drums). We have received numerous requests to continue the story, which was released as a 9 hour audio drama feature.
We have listened - and we are going to produce a new series based on the characters we created. TICONDEROGA - The Series, will start at the same place the feature left us.Season 1 will have 12 half hour episodes.
Production begins Sept. 29th at CRT.

Making THE HALLOWEEN TREE
It was in early July, 2006, when Ray Bradbury asked us to do SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. I once again asked Nancy Curran Willis to direct (she had directed our first production for Ray, DANDELION WINE). Ray emailed me the script from his SWTWC's stage version, I made some sound and music tweaks, set a recording date for the end of August, and we had auditions in Ipswich. This is where we found Anastas Varinos and Matt Robertson. We cast them in the two leads - but the six other kids who showed up were really, really good as well. On the ride home from the audition, I remembered J.T. Turner a few weeks before, talking about Ray's book THE HALLOWEEN TREE - which I had never read. We had the right number of kids for that story.
I called Ray and asked him if he had a script for that one. I'll never forget him saying to me: "No - but this is what you do. Buy the book, get a red pencil, cross out everything but the character dialog, and you'll have your script!" And that is exactly what I did. This was August of 2006 when the script was completed, and on Dec. 2, 2006, we recorded THE HALLOWEEN TREE. The session took the entire day, and we were on the clock for it, as many of the boys were appearing in various Christmas shows in Boston and had to be downtown for the evening curtains. Our cut off time was not negotiable - we had to finish on time - and it was a big script. Not an easy task - but the kids were pros and we got it done.
Nancy got some amazing performances out of the kids. I remember when (in the show) they introduce who they are to each other... "MUMMY" "WITCH" "MR.DEATH" - and Nancy's direction was "I want you to say who you are the way your character would say it." And wouldn't you know, the kid who said "MUMMMY" sounded like a mummy!? I know a mummy can't speak, but if he did, I bet it would sound like the kid you'll hear in the show!
The production did not go into editing until a year later. I wanted to wait till we could upgrade our music program. THE HALLOWEEN TREE needed an extensive score, and if there was a better music program out there - I wanted it. So we saved for it, and got it. It was not easy sitting on it for a year; I knew we had something special.
There
was some criticism when the show was released due to the fact that
there are a few songs in the production. We always stick to book at CRT,
and in the book THE HALLOWEEN TREE, Ray writes how the tree sings -
and he even wrote the lyrics in the book. Jeff used those same lyrics
when he composed the songs (He was excited to see the sheet music "Music
By Jeffrey Gage, Lyrics By Ray Bradbury."
THE HALLOWEEN TREE was released on October 1, 2008, two years after it was recorded, by Blackstone Audio. It won the Ogle Award for Best Fantasy production of 2008. Blackstone did not enter it for an Audie consideration, which was a shame. I think we had a chance that year.
Everything just came together on this one: the cast, the editing, the music. It continues to be a popular item each Halloween Season and a best seller for Bradbury audios - even after six years in release.
The kids are all grown up now. Four of them that I am still in contact with are in college, another went on to star in movies and TV... the others I have lost contact with.
Ray Bradbury was an incredible friend to Colonial - and he trusted us with four of his most iconic works - to which I am forever grateful.
And I still have the book - with all the red lines through it.

SGT. BILLY AND CORP. SAM
CRT WELCOMES SGT. BILLY! We are VERY happy
announce that SGT. BILLY O'BRIEN is coming to CRT for a six episode
western comedy series, SGT. BILLY AND CORP. SAM - with "Sam" being CRT
favorite Sam Donato. Both appeared on the hit WBZ TV show BOOMTOWN
starring Rex Trailer - with Billy as Rex's side-kick for many years.
There's not a kid who grew up in New England from the 1960s to the early
1980's who does not know Sgt. Billy! He and Sam played the miners who
had a poor sense of direction in our 2007 production POWDER RIVER AND
THE MOUNTAIN OF GOLD. Bill is also a world class banjo player who
recorded for MGM records - and of course we'll have some fancy pickin'
and singin' in each episode.
In real life - Bill was a member of the U.S. Cavalry and rose to the rank of Sergeant,-just like his character on the Boomtown show. Bill was also a member of The Honor Guard at his Fort.
SGT. BILLY AND CORP. SAM records next week and will be released in 2015. These are going to fun programs!

THE STAR ANGEL - A NEW MUSICAL
It's no secret that in 2012 CRT released its first full length audio musical, THE STAR ANGEL. The production went on to win the prestigious Parents' Choice Award, and also received a nomination as an Audie Award Finalist as Best Audio Production of 2013 (the Audies are the Academy Awards of the Audiobook Industry).
Jeff Gage (the composer) and I have turned this audio drama into a feature length screenplay, and also, a musical for the live, legit stage. For the theatrical presentation, we have added several new songs, and we created an Original Cast Album, fully orchestrated, of the entire score. We are shopping the score and the script around, and with luck, we may just get it produced!
Hope you check out the recordings. We are very proud of them... and the whole thing only took six years!
Check it out on iTunes - you can hear samples of each number.

QUICK UPDATES
We started work on POWDER RIVER Season 10 this week. It was nice to see most of the cast back (most because not everyone was on call for the session). I think we had three strong episodes, and everyone seemed to like them and felt good about them. It's actually a lot of fun to write these characters and see how they grow over time. The plan is to release the first half of Season 10 in December. MJ Cogburn is producing.
Season 9 is held up at the publishers and it is being delayed, which is not cool. We hope to see it released very soon.
AGENT 13 AND THE INVISIBLE EMPIRE Part 2 is on track and will be out at the end of the summer. Part 1 will be our entry for the Audie Awards.
JACK WARD is writing the script for AGENT 13 AND THE SERPENTINE ASSASSIN, which is the second book in the trilogy, which we will be recording this fall for a summer 2015 release.
SETH ADAM SHER continues post production work on our 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA which is due in December. JEFFREY GAGE is writing and scoring the music.
Lots more going on, but that's all I have time for at the moment - got to get back to my scripts!
cheers from Boston

THE BOOMS IN CAPTAIN BLOOD
I just read a users review for CAPTAIN BLOOD -
they liked the show, but they made a comment that sometimes the sound
effects drown out the voices. That is true! In the battle scenes, there
is 'throw away" dialog; meaning dialog that is not
terribly important (usually orders being shouted) that I intentionally
wanted to be difficult to hear so as to illustrate the intensity of the
battle - especially with 40 17th century 12 pounders booming from a
ships deck. Some of you have have listened to the show may have had the
same thoughts, so I thought I would clarify that it wasn't an editing
error, but intentional. Fun show!

ANALOGY OF A POWDER RIVER WRITING MARATHON
Some of you have seen the poster to an upcoming POWDER RIVER feature,
called THIS SIDE OF FURY. I thought I would write a short note on how
that came about.
There is a celebrity that I would like to work with as a guest star on POWDER RIVER, and I was going to be meeting with him; however at the last minute I realized that presenting a script would be better than "talk" - so on a Wednesday night (I was meeting him in three days) I got the bright idea that I could write a feature length production in three days. I phoned Exec Producer Mark Vander Berg who thought it was a good move - and also crazy, and then I called Deniz Cordell and told him my plan - he also saw the wisdom of presenting a completed script, and also that it would be a back-breaker to do (A feature length script is about 90 pages). I shanghaied him into service and we kicked around some possible ideas.
I already had the title; "This Side Of Fury," which was planned as the opening episode for Season 10 - however the storyline I had in mind for that episode would not work as feature since it ran off of the Season 9 finale - so I would need to get a new title for that episode, and create a new storyline for the feature length "FURY." After about an hour, Deniz and I had come up with enough to get started, and off I went!
All through the night new scenes developed and I sent the pages to Deniz for his two cents and ideas - there was not going to be any wiggle room for re-writes at a later date, which is how it usually goes. The sun came up on the next day and I saw the kids getting on the school bus across the street as a new pot of coffee was brewing and the story continued to develop all day long and into the next night.
Plot lines were changed and re-done - a new idea would come into play which meant a new "lead in" would need to be written (and another re-write). I had a music meeting scheduled with our composer Jeff Gage for Thursday afternoon, which I canceled because I needed to keep going; happily he was okay with the last minute change! At this point I was fifty pages into the script. Deniz would read them and send back thoughts and ideas, and the process continued.
Thursday night came along, and more coffee was brewing. The story had taken a remarkable turn that not only played into the back story of the entire series, but had that "edge" that will shock the fans and at the same time is totally probable and obvious. We both started to get very excited about the story and where it was leading .... but it could not be rushed ... pacing is important.
I was lucky that Deniz was on the other end checking the script not only for typos but for story development; this one did not have the luxury of having a story outline for development and a second draft after completion.
Dawn arrived on Friday morning and the kids got back onto the school bus as the story was plowing forward, and continued to do so all day Friday.
The writing stopped on Friday evening as we had two episodes of ROYALL HOUSE that needed to be recorded. The session took three and a half hours, and soon after that I went into the WBZ studios in Boston to do THE JORDAN RICH SHOW and a 1AM appearance with Flint Dille and David Marconi to promote AGENT 13. I got back home from the show at around three in the morning, and continued to work on the script until almost eight AM.
It was now Saturday morning.
Yikes!
But we were done.
I delivered the script to the actor who I am hoping will guest star. I have doubts that he will do it - however in the end I think we have one of the more exciting POWDER RIVER adventures to date, and the fact that it was done so quickly, in a 72 hour marathon, makes it all the more special.
We'll record it (even if the guest star we pitched to declines), release it, and see what the PR fans think ... but no matter what the reviews are, it was something that I can't believe we pulled off .....
.... and something I'll never forget and hopefully will never have to do again!

Updates
Tomorrow we record three more episodes for POWDER RIVER season 9. These were originally scheduled for a couple of weeks ago, but we had to postpone due to some casting issues; but we're back in the saddle so to speak, and after tomorrow, only two episodes remain. We'll record those in June - just as soon as I write them.
At the moment I am starting on my next ROYALL HOUSE script, and the final installment for the first volume. Not sure if we will continue with any additional episodes - we'll see how Vol. 1 does in release before making that call.
My writing schedule consists of the following: 1 ROYALL HOUSE script, 2 POWDER RIVER Season 9 scripts, 12 POWDER RIVER season 10 scripts, 12 TICONDEROGA season 1 scripts, all due before the end of Sept. In addition, I just finished the latest draft of our stage version script of THE STAR ANGEL, which we will use for pitches, and I'm now working on the latest screenplay version.
At the moment I'm also checking with the cast of regulars for POWDER RIVER regarding the 10th season, which we will begin recording in July. I always give them the option of continuing for another round, or bowing out. So far Jack Libresco (Cheyenne), Lincoln Clark (Doc), Marcia Friedman (Etta), and Ronni Marshak (Mrs. Hudson) have signed on for another 12 episodes.

IT'S DIBBLE IN SHERWOOD FOREST!
We just released THE NEW DIBBLE SHOW - VOL. 4 - which includes Dibble's version of The Adventures Of Robin Hood. Also included in this set is Dibble's futile battle with the town snow removal truck in The Snow Plow, and one of the more popular episodes from the series (meaning one that we would get emails about when the show was on Sirius XM), Niagara Falls. It's available on Audible, Amazon and iTunes.

If it's Monday, we must be taping!
A long nine hour day at the microphones here at CRT; recording some pick up lines with J.T. Turner in the early afternoon, followed by music recording for our revised version of THE STAR ANGEL, and then we recorded 4 episodes of POWDER RIVER - Season 9 ... all the episodes that take place in Clearmont - our main setting. Very, long day - but fun and productive. It's so great to be able to work with this fantastic cast. 2 more sessions remain for season 9, which will be released in July.

POWDER RIVER Update
POWDER RIVER UPDATE - The post production on
the second half of Season 8 is coming along wonderfully! MJ Cogburn is
doing an outstanding job on putting the episodes together, seamlessly
carrying on after Seth Adam Sher's amazing work on Seasons
5,6,7. We have some new characters arriving in Clearmont - including
Mrs. Octavia Hudson (Ronni Marshak), her son Andrew (Josh Lees), and
then there's Laurel McCoy (Esthers's niece), and another young man who
may be as fast on the draw as Britt; he goes by the name of Cheyenne -
and is played by Jack Libresco. Watch for these new episodes in April!
In the meantime, if you haven't already - be sure to listen to Season 8,
Part 1 (or if you are just discovering the series - Seasons
1,2,3,4,5,6,and 7 are a good start, too!) POWDER RIVER from C-R-T!
